I'm pretty sure this made nationwide headlines.. But if you don't know, on 19 March 2009, there was a high speed chase in San Diego that started on the I-5 freeway. Now you might be thinking, "What's the big deal? It's Southern California. That happens all the time!" Well, once on the I-805 freeway the alleged marijuana dealers tossed cash out of the vehicle as they were fleeing.
San Diego police officers and agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) only recovered $17,000 on the freeway. The DEA has since said that they only have a total of $40,000 recovered. Yes, that was all they were able to recover. Why "only"? Federal agents are claiming that they recovered less than a quarter of the $225,000 grand total.
There is still around $185,000 unaccounted for.
Where in the hell is that 185K!? We should ask those stuck in traffic behind the car chase; there are account witnesses that have stated that people got out of their cars and pocketed as much money as they could. Now being that the fugitives were tossing Jacksons and Benjamins onto the freeway, it really wouldn't take much pocket stuffing to get a nice bonus.
And guess what? the Feds would like their money back. Being that we have Big Brother to take care of us (HA!) the federal government is calmly telling those that picked up any money from the freeway to return it. They're also saying that thanks to the cameras on the freeways, They know who did what. And since this happened on the freeway, people were in their cars... I'm sure there are images of several cars' license plates.
Several people have since returned some or all of the money they thought they scored that Thursday. However, the NBC station here in San Diego found this person; she/he does not have any intention on returning the $720 he/she picked up and has already planned on how to spend it. Read the interview.
Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but I get the feeling that "Cashed In" is female. And very selfish. I think the reasons she/he gave as to why they decided to keep the cash is pure bullshit. I also think that the person is not setting a good example for his/her teenager or anyone else around them. Just because they think they're a good person doesn't mean they deserve to keep money that was going to be used to make drug purchases. Nor does it mean that they didn't do anything illegal.
Uhh hello? There is a reason why the DEA wants it back. Its effing evidence. Period.
I personally don't think that I would have kept any of the money had I been there. As difficult as the times are right now, I see it as being dirty money en route to be used for illicit things. I don't want that. I earn my money or I deal with what I have.
I'll stop myself from going on a rant and just ask you:
You're stuck in So Cal rush hour traffic when 20 and 100 dollar bills begin to float down on the freeway right in front of your car.
What would you have done? Do you keep as much cash as you can? Or help the authorities collect the money?
Forget Jesus. What would YOU do?
